Remote-First AI Roles Are Reshaping Talent Migration Across Southeast Asia

AI companies in Singapore and beyond are hiring across Southeast Asia without requiring relocation. The geography of AI careers in the region is changing faster than anyone anticipated.

The traditional model of AI career development in Southeast Asia involved relocating to Singapore to access global opportunities. A third option is now disrupting both paths: remote-first employment at companies that recruit across the region without requiring the move.

Who is hiring remotely

Remote-first AI employers fall into three categories: global technology companies like Grab, Sea Group, and GoTo that have stopped requiring Singaporean residency for most technical roles; Western AI companies that find Southeast Asia an attractive source of English-language technical talent at lower cost; and Singapore-headquartered AI scaleups hiring in Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City, or Manila at 40–60% of Singapore salaries while accessing comparable skill levels.

The talent that benefits most

The primary beneficiaries are engineers in Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines with strong model development or MLOps skills and good English communication. Vietnam in particular has emerged as a significant source of remote AI talent — several engineers describe receiving offers from Singapore-based companies paying USD 80,000–120,000 annually while remaining in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.

The complication

Remote hiring at international salary levels creates new strains. Local tech companies in Jakarta, Manila, and Ho Chi Minh City are finding it increasingly difficult to retain engineers with international remote options. The talent that Southeast Asia most needs to develop its own AI capabilities is the talent most likely to work remotely for companies elsewhere.
